Is Mildew Actually Different From Mold?

Mold and mildew are both fungi — FEMA states plainly that "mildew and molds are fungi," and lists "mildew (mold in early stage)" right alongside the molds that grow on drywall, wood, and fabric. So mildew is not a separate species you can catch to avoid a "real" mold problem. It is the same organism, usually just earlier and flatter. Is mildew dangerous, or is it harmless? +
Mildew is not a separate, harmless thing. Can mildew turn into mold? +

Is black mold the same as mildew? +

Is plant powdery or downy mildew the same as bathroom mildew? +
No — this is the one place the word "mildew" points to specific, distinct organisms. On plants, "powdery mildew" is caused by true fungi (the order Erysiphales), while "downy mildew" is caused by oomycetes, or water molds, which are not true fungi at all.
